Review: The Old Course at St Andrews
OVERVIEW
The origin of all golf architecture is the Old Course at St. Andrews. Since then, every course that has been created has either been a reaction against it or a response to one or more of its characteristics. Architects love or hate the Old Course’s blind shots; they adore the massive greens at St Andrews or think they’re a waste of turf. The most recent contentious issue is Martin Hawtree’s design modifications, which many first regarded as sacrilege before the 2015 and 2022 Open Championships.
REVIEW
For an experience, the starter’s hut itself is significantly more ‘genuine’. To proceed, you must present your handicap certificate here. They have, in fact, only looked at my once. Even though one of the group that day didn’t have theirs with them, they were nonetheless waved through. Not that the course isn’t organized well. Rangers will be monitoring you while you’re out on the course, so if you find yourself falling behind the lead group, please catch up with them. They’ve never asked us to move on, but they’ve also always been a pleasant group!
Asking the starter to snap a picture of you on the first tee is nothing to be ashamed about. I don’t think a selfie on the first tee would do it justice because they are so accustomed to it! Do enjoy the ambience; it’s really unlike anything else in golf. The starting, who is you, not the starter, will take a deep breath after announcing your arrival over the tannoy. There will probably be several visitors observing you. Even if it has one of the broadest fairways in golf, anxiety won’t go away in the slightest.
The course is highly equitable and open. You will be well served and avoid most of the trouble if you lean left, as has been repeatedly and thoroughly demonstrated. I had to make an 80-yard putt on one of the enormous greens. One of my playing partners, who plays off three, had a 74 with forty putts (well, two from just off the green) the first time I played here because he just couldn’t miss the enormous greens.
Everyone finds the round to be incredibly enjoyable because of its playability, and the play has always moved at a fairly good clip. Since you’re probably already familiar with them, there’s hardly much use in my attempting to provide you with a hole-by-hole account.
